Richard Studer is an Opera Director, Designer and Printmaker living in the Welsh market town of Presteigne. Richard exhibits regularly across the Welsh borders and has work in private collections from Aberdaron to Australia. He trained in printmaking at the Sydney Nolan Trust. He made his professional opera debut as a director and designer in 1993 at The Bristol Old Vic and has worked extensively at festivals and houses across the UK opera scene. Richard is currently Artistic Director of Mid Wales Opera one of the National Portfolio companies of the Arts Council of Wales.
As an opera director and designer, like others in the creative industry, his diary was decimated with theatres closed so with time on his hands he started working with Linocuts again - a technique he loves as "there is something so intensely therapeutic about carving the blocks".
His work as a designer is never far from the finished prints and there is an illustrative quality to them with a strong influence on line and pattern as well as a smattering of humour... Richard loves working in monochrome and pushing the boundaries of detail that can be achieved in the carving.
