Maggy aims to create dynamic and colourful abstractions that are derived from local landscapes - capturing their light and atmosphere with rich and intense colour. She is less concerned with direct representation of a particular scene than exploring her own reaction to it. Images may combine elements from different locations in terms of patterns, colours and illusions of space.
Maggy sketches ‘en pleine-aire’ in watercolour and then paints primarily in acrylic, often working on several paintings simultaneously to stop her from becoming too precious about any single image.
The cottages or farmhouses in the paintings are symbolic features, representing the idea of home. She has lived in rural Wales for many years and these features are intended to a sense of belonging.
Having trained and worked as an illustrator, Maggy later taught in that discipline before retiring.
"I now have the freedom to paint wherever I travel. These paintings are inspired by the landscapes around my home in Mid Wales."
