Ray studied art and architecture at the Harris College in Preston in the 1960s. He became disillusioned with the lack of challenge in small town architecture and, in 1969, joined the Army. Over the next nearly 30 years he painted and, where possible, exhibited in many parts of the World. On leaving the Army in 1998 Ray moved to Pembrokeshire and started painting full time.
Unfortunately, in 2013 a severe illness effectively put him out of action for several years, previously he used a variety of media. He now paints exclusively in oils, using glazing techniques rather than impasto. Ray has an endless fascination with the sea and the sky, the interplay of light between them and the effect this has on clouds and, in turn, the effect they have on the sea. Blink, and the scene has changed.
