Jazz Finds showcased rarely seen jazz paintings by artist John Clare who founded the legendary jazz and black music shop ‘Honest Jon’s Records’ in 1974. Honest Jon’s is now the longest running record business in London. Having enjoyed putting on live performances in the ‘80’s at the 100 Club in London’s Oxford Street with many American legends such as Jimmy Witherspoon, Slim Gaillard, James Moody, Red Rodney, Art Farmer, Eddie Lockjaw Davis and many others, John’s jazz paintings convey the essential feeling, both the emotional and the atmospheric, of jazz.
Jazz Finds also featured two photographic images of jazz legends Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk by the iconic photographer John Bulmer. These were shown along side a series of photographs captured by Max Farrar at Leeds Jazz in the 80s.
As part of Found’s commitment to supporting graduates the exhibition included two beautiful Aeolian harps crafted in metal by newly graduated designer blacksmith Frederick Andrews.
Life sized metal sculptures from Alan Ross and tiny wire worked pieces by Nina Lazarou were shown along side ceramic plaques of musical instruments by Liz Lawrence and pottery creations of instruments and more by Ian Rylatt.
Jazz Finds also included some work by Penarth artist, Pauline Williams. Pauline exhibited a collection of original, pen and ink drawings, of local musicians, which had been drawn from life whilst the music plays, 'reportage' style.
