Angie Hughes is an artist and tutor from Ledbury. Her work is largely influenced by the natural world particularly plant forms. As part of our 5 Women at Found exhibition earlier this year we showed some of Angie's Klimt Series.
These pieces are inspired by pattern taken from one of Klimt’s paintings the famous Woman in Gold or ‘The Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer’. Angie uses a foil technique in her work - a very shimmery twinkly process that works well when making embroideries observing Klimt’s golden paintings. She also use a shiny machine embroidery thread which adds to the luminous quality of the stitched surfaces.Studying City & Guilds Embroidery in the 90's taught her to experiment with different materials and techniques and this would be the way that she would always start projects in future years. She has spent time honing her skills on the sewing machine, all of her pieces have machine embroidery somewhere.A friend describes her as a process based artist, she would agree always enjoying placing a pile of paints, printing blocks and fabrics on her work table, pondering ways of making something new and exciting. This kind of jigsaw process is reflected in her current work.
