Deborah's Icarus Angel series of four charcoal drawings with an ink wash were inspired by the story of WW2 pilot David Raikes who lost his life at the end of WW2. David had wriiten a number of poems about his experiences as a young pilot before he dies and Deborah also painted a large diptych inspired by his poem Let it Be Hushed. Icarus is the mythological figure who fell from the sky when he flew too close to the sun.
Deborah studied at Chelsea School of Art from 1974 -78 leaving with a BA Fine Art Hons followed by a three year post graduate course at the National Film School. After leaving college she worked for 15 or so years as a designer in the British film and television industry. Wanting to be more home-based to spend time with her daughter, she transferred her design skills to gardens, working as a garden designer until moving to Hay 5 years ago. Now with more free time she has been able to return to her first love - painting!
For Deborah the series of pictures were not only a homage to David Raikes and his crew, but a heartfelt homage to all young men that die prematurely, whatever the circumstances.
