Earthenware, woodfired mug

Since setting up his workshop in the Forest of Dean in 1990, Nigel Lambert has held many joint and solo exhibitions throughout the world. In 1990 he was the youngest person to be elected a full member of the Craft Potters Association; exhibiting in their London gallery on a regular basis, including a solo show in 1996. He has exhibited internationally including a British Council Touring exhibition in South America, ‘European Slipware’ in Tegelan, Netherlands, Galerie Du Dom, France, International Woodfired Tableware exhibition, Tasmania, Australia.

Throughout his time of making pots he has been drawn to the work of Roger Hilton, Terry Frost, Patrick Heron and other artists from the Cornish peninsula, they have influenced the decorative marks he makes using Cobalt oxide on white clay slip. Taking these influences, he approaches his work not as a painter, but as a potter.

The pots he makes are fired in a large woodfired kiln which is fuelled with softwood off-cuts, this method of firing is un-predictable and challenging, ash and flames adding that extra quality to the finished glaze.
