Connor says of his work "I have grown up working as a traditional timber framer; creating buildings and structures with time tested techniques. I learnt these techniques from my father, Alan, and we have been working together under the banner of Hewnwood for twelve years. We also run workshops throughout the year, teaching and sharing the precision and art of traditional timber framing with people from all over the world.
When I'm not building or teaching you'll find me creating bowls, furniture and other wood curiosities in a little woodland workshop just outside of Brecon. I tend to make most of my items using traditional techniques and without the use of mechanical fixings. The bowls are made using a leg powered treadle lathe and hook tools. I believe there is much honest beauty to see when every part of a finished item is created using an edged tool, every cut made with the purpose to remain, not to be sanded away at a later date. The majority of timber I use comes from the woodland
I manage - using coppiced, wind blown and diseased trees. I love the process of handling and working the timber from tree to finished piece.
Wood is such a diverse, sustainable and tactile material, that we all admire."
