Almost exactly a year on from when we first opened Found Gallery we re-opened after the first 2020 lock down on Tuesday, July 14th with an exhibition featuring marine artist Nick John Rees.
Nick's work focusses on his life long love of the sea. Alongside Nick’s paintings we welcomed back potter, Nigel Lambert, with his slip decorated wood-fired earthenware. His thrown and altered pots combine bold contemporary shapes, with his unique style of decoration and strong sense of function. We were also delighted that Yvette Brown sent us some of her charming pewter characters on driftwood. Her Christmas themed ones were very popular in our Seasonal Finds exhibition and we were sure her 'dog walking on the beach' montages would be equally successful.
The re-opening of the gallery also offered visitors the chance of seeing the work close up of another potter, Nick Membery, whose work had been ‘in the windows’ during the lockdown.
In addition the gallery welcomed some work by Ceredigion based ‘Beachcomber’ jeweller, Kerry Hughes along with Herefordshire based ‘artist blacksmith', Jacob Edwards. Jacob graduated from Hereford Art College in 2019, a year when he also won The Stanley Allcard Memorial Trophy, The Lion Gallery Award, The Nertherton Award and The Bernard and Catherine Gay Award for Outstanding Creativity.
Our bay window featured two beautiful sculptures by Glenn Morris. The two pieces are examples of some of the earliest forms of life and are both examples of Ediacarian fauna. Glenn worked on the sculptures during lockdown in the spring of 2020. One is made of Carrara marble, the other from Portland stone.
A final addition to the exhibition were slab built, paper clay vessels whimsically decorated with wildlife and fauna by Deidre Houghton.
