Anne's artistic journey began at her mother’s knee in her pottery in Suffolk where she was born. During Anne's mother's working life she became a well-known illustrative potter in Wales, England and Australia. In her workshop, as far back as Anne can remember, she ‘helped’ her in small ways, she played with clay, and absorbed her artistic and creative abilities as if through the pores of her skin.
Anne studied Woven Textile Design in Carmarthen College of Art, and later completed an HND in Art and Design at Cardigan College. In both places she learned about the use of colour and form, and began a journey exploring the meaning of art and culture, especially its importance in everyday life amongst ordinary people. Anne draws inspiration from a long line of creative artists in her family, especially her grandfather Frank Medworth, and our family friendships with artists including David Jones, Eric Gill, and Edward Ardizzone.
Anne established a small pottery in Pembrokeshire where she and her mother worked together. Her mother taught her all that she knew, how to use the clay, different methods of decoration, glazing, how to manage a kiln and get the best out of the materials. When she was away, Anne continued her creative journey and slowly, using the same methods, she developed her own individual style which has changed and matured over time.
Anne loves the grounding connection and the earthy feel of clay. She finds real joy in creating forms out of raw materials simply extracted from the earth, and in the same breath she loves to elevate such elemental materials - her canvases - with a few pigments, chemicals and heat with which she illustrates her ideas. Anne's designs are inspired by the unique culture of the country she lives in, its myths and legends and the inherent beauty of her immediate environment.
For thirty years Anne sold her pottery in The Sessions House Gallery in Newport, and after the owner retired, she opened a showroom – Ink.Clay.Wood - which is gaining a good reputation at Pantry Fields her home in North Pembrokeshire.
